Your Annual Review Guide!

Reflect, Systemize, and Strategize: Your Annual Review Guide!

We do not learn from experience…we learn from reflecting on experience. — John Dewey

The end of the year is a unique opportunity to pause, reflect and reset. It’s not just about closing the chapter on 2024 but laying the foundation for a better 2025. This guide combines reflection, goal-setting, and system-building into a seamless process.

By the time you’re done, you’ll have:

  1. A clear understanding of where you’ve been.
  2. A roadmap for where you’re headed.
  3. A suite of systems to keep you on track.

Step 1: Reflect on 2024

Reflection is the foundation of growth. Without it, you’re likely to repeat the same patterns. Start your review with these questions:

  1. What did I change my mind on this year? Growth often comes from embracing new ideas. What beliefs, assumptions, or habits did you outgrow?
  2. What created energy this year? Review your calendar and identify activities, people, or projects that energized you. Did you prioritize them?
  3. What drained energy this year? On the flip side, what consistently left you feeling depleted? Reflect on how you can minimize these in the future.
  4. What were the boat anchors in my life? These could be people, habits, or mindsets that held you back. Acknowledge them and plan for their removal.
  5. What did I avoid because of fear? The things we fear often hold the most potential for growth. What would you do if fear wasn’t a factor?
  6. What were my greatest hits and worst misses? Celebrate your wins and examine your misses to uncover lessons and patterns.
  7. What did I learn this year? Write down your biggest takeaways. These insights will be your guide for the year ahead.

Step 2: Set Goals for 2025

Now that you’ve reflected, it’s time to define where you want to go. Use this Goal-Setting Framework to create meaningful goals:

Define Your Big Goals

Focus on key areas of your life (e.g., health, career, relationships). For each, ask:

What’s the one thing I want to achieve in this area?

Why is it important to me?

Break It Down

Set smaller milestones for each big goal. This ensures progress and prevents overwhelm.

Example:

Big Goal: Launch a business.

Milestones:

  1. Conduct market research (by January 31).
  2. Develop a minimum viable product (by March 31).
  3. Launch to beta testers (by June 30).

Step 3: Build Systems to Support Your Goals

Goals set the destination, but systems ensure you get there. Here are three mental models to create robust systems:

  1. The Feedback Loop: Regularly assess what’s working and what isn’t.
    1. Input → What actions are you taking?
    2. Output → What results are you seeing?
    3. Adjustment → What needs tweaking?
  2. The Keystone Habit: Focus on habits that create a domino effect. For example, exercising regularly might also improve sleep and productivity.
  3. The 1% Rule: Small, consistent improvements compound over time. Aim for progress, not perfection.

Step 4: Track and Adjust

Even the best systems need regular maintenance. Here’s how to stay aligned with your goals throughout the year:

Use an Energy Calendar

  • Color-code your calendar. Use this as a guide to adjust how you allocate your time:
    • Green: Activities that energized you.
    • Red: Activities that drained you.
    • Yellow: Neutral activities.

Monthly Check-Ins

  • Reflect on your progress:
    • Are you on track with your goals?
    • Are your systems working?
    • What adjustments do you need to make?

Embrace Flexibility

If something isn’t working, don’t hesitate to pivot. Growth is an iterative process.

Step 5: Reimagine Your Future

An annual review isn’t just about looking back; it’s about envisioning what’s possible. Use your insights to create a map for 2025, filled with curiosity, experiments, and new adventures.

Think of this process as your guide to turning reflection into action, action into systems, and systems into sustained growth.

Here are some structured templates to help you with this process. Don’t overthink it — the best method is the one you’ll actually use.

Final Thoughts

Whatever this year brought, give yourself credit for navigating it. Rest, recharge, and know that the best version of yourself is built through reflection and intentionality.

Take this process one step at a time, and by the time you step into 2025, you’ll have the clarity, systems, and strategy to make it a year to remember.

Most people don’t fully realize the success they seek depends on the systems they build. Others understand it but fail to internalize it enough to take meaningful action. They waste their days on reactive tasks, relying heavily on chance and memory, repeating the same manual processes and living in constant inefficiency. By the end of each day, they are frustrated and keep asking...
